What Is the Difference Between PE Civil: Structural and the SE Exam?

PE Civil: Structural is one discipline within the PE Civil exam family. How long is each Structural exam section?

Each breadth section contains 55 questions: 45 scored and 10 unscored pretest items. For Structural depth beginning April 2027, the appointment remains 6.5 hours with six hours of exam time. The reduction is in the number of pretest questions, not the scored-question count or stated exam time. Is the PE Civil: Structural exam offered year-round?

Yes. NCEES currently administers PE Civil: Structural year-round at approved Pearson test centers. Board approval or a separate application may still be required before registration, depending on the jurisdiction.

How much do the exams cost?

As of August 2026, the NCEES fee for PE Civil is $400. Each Structural breadth or depth section costs $350, for $1,400 across four first attempts. Retakes and separate board application or licensing fees can increase the total.

What changes in April 2027?

New PE Civil specifications and standards take effect. Structural depth sections decrease from 60 to 48 total questions while retaining 40 scored questions and six hours of exam time. The depth format adds multiple-choice, single-response items, and NCEES provides separate building and bridge depth specifications.
