PE Exam Day Survival Guide: What to Bring, Expect, and Do

Months of studying come down to one long day. This guide covers the practical parts of PE exam day — what to bring, how the day is structured, and how to be ready the night before — so nothing about the logistics catches you off guard.

What to Bring to the PE Exam

Required items

Valid photo ID. An unexpired, government-issued photo ID from the country where you're testing. An international passport or U.S. military ID also works. Digital copies and expired IDs are never accepted.

NCEES-approved calculator. For 2026, only these models are allowed: Casio fx-115 and fx-991 series; Texas Instruments TI-30X and TI-36X series; and HP 33s and HP 35s. A solar model avoids a dead battery mid-exam.

Appointment confirmation letter. Print it and bring it. Not every center asks for it, but it makes check-in smoother.

Allowed at your seat or in your locker

• Soft foam earplugs (no electronic or noise-canceling devices)
• Tissues, cough drops or lozenges, eye drops
• Snacks and water — kept in your locker and used only during the break
• Medical aids such as braces or hearing aids, with documentation if required

Not allowed

• Phones, smartwatches, and fitness trackers
• Wallets and purses at your seat (store them in the locker)
• Food or drink in the testing room
• Your own notes, references, scratch paper, or pens — the center provides writing materials

What to Expect on Exam Day

The schedule

Plan for about nine hours at the center:

• 2-minute nondisclosure agreement
• 8-minute tutorial on the exam interface and rules
• 8 hours of testing for 80 questions — roughly 6 minutes each
• One scheduled 50-minute break between the two halves

Check-in

Arrive about 30 minutes before your appointment. Check-in includes ID verification, a palm-vein scan and photo, a locker assignment for your belongings, and a security screening.

During the exam

• The current NCEES reference handbook appears on screen as a searchable PDF, and you can view it split-screen alongside each question.
• Built-in tools let you flag questions, jump between them, and track your progress.

Results

You won't get your score at the center. For the year-round computer-based PE exams, results are typically posted within 7–10 business days.

Before Exam Day

The week before

Stop cramming a day or two out — rest does more for your score than a last-minute review. Spend some of that time practicing with the exact calculator you'll use and getting comfortable searching a PDF handbook (Ctrl+F, and knowing where each major section lives), so neither slows you down on the day.

The night before

Pack everything and get a full night's sleep. Eat a light dinner and skip alcohol or unfamiliar food. Have this ready by the door:

• Photo ID, expiration checked
• Calculator with fresh batteries or a verified solar panel
• Printed confirmation letter
• Comfortable clothes and a planned breakfast
• Your route confirmed, with extra time built in

On Exam Day

• Arrive 30–45 minutes early — enough of a buffer without a long, nervous wait.
• Eat a real breakfast with protein and complex carbs, and go easy on caffeine.
• Triage as you go: answer the quick questions first, give the heavy calculations more time, and flag anything that stalls you so you can return to it.
• Use the full break to eat, hydrate, and move around before the second half.
• Remember the exam tests minimum competency, not perfection — you don't need every question to pass.

After the Exam

Don't discuss specific questions with anyone; doing so violates the nondisclosure agreement you signed. Results usually post within 7–10 business days for year-round exams — a good window to look into your state board's remaining licensure steps.
