What the PE exam is
The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam tests competency in your specific discipline, and it's the final step to licensure in every state. Unlike the FE, which covers broad fundamentals, the PE goes deep. It isn't graded on a curve: a panel of licensed engineers sets a minimum passing standard, your raw score is scaled against it, and you pass if you meet it — regardless of how anyone else does.
The current format (2026)
The PE Civil exam is computer-based, offered year-round at Pearson VUE centers. You get an 80-question exam inside a 9-hour appointment (8 hours of exam time plus a 50-minute scheduled break and a short tutorial). A few things to know:
- Questions are multiple choice plus a few alternative item types (fill-in, select-all, drag-and-drop).
- The old breadth/depth split is gone — since April 2024, every question is discipline-specific.
- References are provided on-screen; you bring nothing but an approved calculator.
- There's no penalty for a wrong answer, so never leave a question blank.
The path to licensure
For most engineers it looks like this:
- Earn an ABET-accredited engineering degree.
- Pass the FE exam (required in most states; waivable with extra experience in a few).
- Get ~4 years of qualifying experience under a licensed PE.
- Apply to your state board and get approved to sit.
- Register with NCEES ($400) and schedule at a Pearson VUE center.
- Pass the exam, then apply for your license with the state board.
Eligibility
You'll generally need an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering (engineering-technology and related-science degrees are accepted in some states, often with extra experience). Almost every state requires the FE exam first, and about four years of progressive experience under a licensed PE who can attest to your work. Registration, fees, and attempts
You register and schedule through your MyNCEES account once your state board approves you. The NCEES fee is $400; most state boards add an application fee (typically $50–$200). NCEES allows one attempt per testing window and three per 12-month period. How to prepare
Give yourself 3–4 months and study in steady daily sessions rather than weekend marathons. The single biggest lever is how you study: spend most of your time actively solving problems and testing yourself, not passively re-reading — retrieval practice builds far stronger recall. Take full-length, timed practice exams in the real CBT format so exam day feels routine, and track your scores by topic so you know where to focus.
On pacing, 80 questions across 8 hours is about six minutes each on average — but some take 30 seconds and others 15 minutes, so triage: answer the easy ones first and flag the hard ones to revisit. Exam day
Arrive about 30 minutes early with a government photo ID, and complete the on-screen tutorial to settle in. Bring an approved calculator (and a backup) — NCEES permits only specific models: all Casio fx-115 and fx-991, all TI-30X and TI-36X, and the HP 33s and HP 35s. During the exam, read each question fully, work the easy points first, flag and return to the hard ones, answer every question, and use your scheduled break to reset. After the exam
Results come in about 7–10 business days, reported pass/fail only. If you pass, your state board sends next steps for the licensure application; submit your documentation and fees and you'll receive your PE license and seal.
